Sa gavina Turismo Responsable Illes Medes

The Medes Islands in l’Estartit are an archipelago located opposite the fishing village in the municipality of Torroella de Montgrí, Costa Brava. They are an extension of the Montgrí massif into the sea and consist of seven islets: Meda Gran, Meda Petita, Carall Bernat, Ferranelles, Tascó Gros and Tascó Petit.

What makes the Medes Islands in l’Estartit unique?

Their proximity to the coast has made the islands very accessible. For centuries they were a refuge for sailors, monks and even pirates, but today their greatest treasure lies beneath the sea.

Since 1990 they have been part of the Medes Islands Marine Nature Reserve, one of the most important in the western Mediterranean. Their seabeds are a real spectacle: Posidonia meadows, underwater caves, walls covered with gorgonians and fish such as groupers, giltheads and barracudas that approach divers without fear. On the surface, they have Mediterranean vegetation adapted to harsh conditions and are a breeding ground for seabirds such as the Corsa shearwater.
