Do you know the history of the Torre del Rellotge?
L’Estartit stands out above all for its beautiful landscape, but also for its historic buildings. Today, we will focus on the famous Torre del Rellotge, a building full of curiosities that forms part of the town’s cultural heritage
A historic symbol in the heart of l’Estartit
The Torre del Rellotge (known as the ‘perola’) is one of the best known and most interesting buildings in l’Estartit.
This unique landmark is located in the centre of l’Estartit: Calle Santa Anna. This street is one of the busiest areas in the town, as it is home to a variety of shops and businesses that attract visitors to take pleasant strolls there.
From functional tower to local landmark
During the 19th century, the Torre del Rellotge was a key location for this town because it was where the cotton nets used by fishermen were dyed. This process of dyeing the fabric—specifically to a darker color than the original—was essential to make the fabric more suitable for fishing.
The tower remained in operation until approximately 1890, when this practice ceased to be carried out in the traditional manner.
Architectural details and curiosities
If you look closely at its structure, you will see that the tower retains some unique features:
- At the top is a small bell tower.
- Just below it is a sundial, which gives the building its name.
- In addition, its façade is decorated with a surrealist painting by local artist Joan Fuster, adding a modern artistic touch to this historic landmark.
