Every first weekend of September, the picturesque town of Begur, in the heart of the Costa Brava, turns into a vibrant stage that takes visitors straight back to the 19th century. XIX.
This is the Indianos Fair, a celebration that pays tribute to the legacy of the “Indianos” – Catalans who emigrated to the Americas, especially Cuba, in search of fortune, and who, upon returning, left an unmistakable mark on the region.
Origins and meaning
During the 18th and 19th centuries, many people from Begur set off for the “New World”. Some prospered in trade and, once back, built elegant colonial-style mansions that still decorate the town’s streets. The fair was created to honor this historic and cultural connection with the Americas – particularly with Cuba – reflected in Begur’s food, music, and architecture.
What to discover at the fair?
The Indianos Fair is not just a themed market, but an immersive experience that combines tradition and celebration:
- Craft and overseas products market: coffee, rum, spices, and colonial-inspired goods.
- Music and dance: habaneras, Cuban rhythms, and lively street performances.
- Gastronomy: rum tastings, exotic cocktails, and dishes with Caribbean influence.
- Activities for all ages: workshops, historical reenactments, and guided tours of Indianos houses.
A unique atmosphere
The cobbled streets of the old town come alive with colors, bunting, and white linen outfits reminiscent of colonial times. Locals and visitors alike dress in period style, while the sound of habaneras fills the squares, creating a festive yet nostalgic atmosphere.
