Origins and Meaning of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The Festival of the Mare de Déu del Carme has its roots in the deep devotion of sailors and fishermen towards the Virgin of Carmen. She is known as the protector of those who sail the seas.

The tradition dates back centuries, when fishermen in the region sought the protection of the Virgin to face the dangers of the sea. This devotion has remained alive over the years, and every July 16th, l’Estartit pays tribute to its patroness with a series of celebrations and activities.

Maritime Procession in l’Estartit

The central event of the Festival of the Mare de Déu del Carme is undoubtedly the maritime procession. This poignant procession begins with a solemn mass in honor of the Virgin of Carmen, held at the local church. Following the ceremony, an image of the Virgin is carried in procession to the port, accompanied by residents and visitors.

Once at the port, the image of the Virgin is placed on a boat adorned with flowers and flags. The fishing boats, along with other local vessels, form an impressive procession that sails along the coast of l’Estartit.

This moving maritime procession is a visual and spiritual spectacle that attracts hundreds of spectators every year.
