{"id":35487,"date":"2018-04-18T04:34:01","date_gmt":"2018-04-18T02:34:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sagavinaestartit.com\/el-estartit-celebrates-saint-anthony-the-abbot\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T17:11:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T16:11:16","slug":"estartit-celebrates-saint-anthony-the-abbot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sagavinaestartit.com\/en\/estartit-celebrates-saint-anthony-the-abbot\/","title":{"rendered":"El Estartit celebrates Saint Anthony the Abbot"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot in l\u2019Estartit 2025<\/h2>\n<h3>Celebrate the most heart-warming winter tradition on the Costa Brava<\/h3>\n<p>On <strong>Sunday 19 January 2025<\/strong>, the <strong>port of l\u2019Estartit<\/strong> will host one of the most eagerly awaited celebrations of the winter: the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot, patron saint of animals.<\/p>\n<p>This is a religious and popular festival deeply rooted in Catalan-speaking villages, where families, neighbours and visitors gather to bless their pets and farm animals and enjoy a festive atmosphere steeped in tradition.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Origin and meaning of the festival<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Saint Anthony the Abbot lived between the 2nd and 4th centuries and, according to Christian tradition, was a man who showed great love and respect for animals, with whom he lived in harmony in the desert.<br \/>\nFor this reason, every year, his feast day is celebrated with the traditional blessing of animals, asking for health and protection for them.<\/p>\n<p>Saint Anthony the Abbot is also considered the patron saint of farmers, mule drivers and butchers, trades historically linked to working with animals.<\/p>\n<p>This festival, deeply rooted in Catalan culture, is considered the winter festival par excellence, a prelude to carnival and a symbol of the cultural and ethnological heritage of the area.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>San Antonio Abad Festival Programme 2025:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>12:30 p.m. Pet gathering.<\/li>\n<li>1 p.m. Parade through the streets of l&#8217;Estartit.<\/li>\n<li>1:15 p.m. Blessing of pets and their owners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information, please consult the complete programme on the \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agendatorroella.com\/ca\/programacio\/c\/10266-festa-de-sant-antoni-benediccio-de-mascotes-i.html\">Agenda Torroella<\/a><\/strong>\u201d website.<\/p>\n<p>Pets are welcome at our <a href=\"https:\/\/sagavinaestartit.com\/en\/\">apartments in l&#8217;Estartit<\/a>, Sa Gavina.
